The original DeLorean was built from January 1981 through December of 1982, for the model years 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Minor exterior differences aside, the best way to determine the model year is to look at the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The character in the 10th position of the VIN determines the model year. The letter "B" is 1981, "C" is 1982 and "D" is 1983.

The build date of the car, found on the metal plate in the drivers door jamb, therefore may be different than the model year of the VIN. For example, 1982 production began in December of 1981, and all 1983 models have indicated build dates of August, September and December of 1982.
